Paragraph on Speeches

Frederick Douglass's speech and the Seneca Falls' speech share many similarities. Frederick Douglass refers to the abolitionist movement. In his speech, he expresses his discomfort for Independence Day. Since there were still slaves, he wondered if the 4th of July really celebrated everyone's independence. Slaves were treated like animals and could not acquire liberty until about many years later. Seneca Falls' refers to the antebellum women's rights movement. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott took action and promoted the first women's rights convention. In the speech, they displayed their injustice they experienced because of their deprived rights. Women could not take part in political events and other various things. In the two speeches, both parties fought for their equality and freedom. Because of their limited rights, they had to take a stand for themselves. They were denied of education and deprived of money that they earned. Both experienced injustice and displayed their distress about it.

Fredrick Douglass

Frederick Douglass was a slave that opposed Independence Day because the Declaration of Independence contradicts slavery.

1) (answer to what the 4th of July is to a slave) "A day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim." This means that slaves were unjustified during Independence day because they were not free.

2) "Your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license," This quotes displays the point of view of a slave and how cruel it was to have your liberty restricted while everyone else was claimed to be free.

3) "There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices, more shocking and bloody, than are the people of these United States, at this very hour." Frederick Douglass is expressing his distress towards the United States and how shameless they are to be claiming to be a free country.

4) "I see the bleeding footsteps...on the way to the slave-markets, where the victims are to be sold like horses, sheep, and swine..." Slaves were not being treated like human beings and were being sold off like animals.

5) "The Fugitive Slave Law makes MERCY TO THEM, A CRIME; and bribes the judge who tries them." This quote shows the injustice and how people would bribe the judge into not taking the slaves' side.

I think that this van accident is very tragic and I hope that everybody involved is okay. This is relative to my sister's life because she got into a car accident once. It was caused by a car that was speeding while my sister was trying to turn out of the driveway. Of course, it was seen as her fault because the other car had the right away.
